This painting process involves carefully placing hot melted wax to mask areas that must remain white or retain their final color. The melted wax seals the porous paper and prevents new color from being absorbed in those areas. The final process requires the entire piece to be coated in wax and processed with a final coloring to give the Ginwashi painting the look of crackled fabric batik.
